Kinematic properties of gas and stars in 20 disc galaxies ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆

چکیده
Ionized gas and stellar kinematical parameters have been measured along the major axis of 20 nearby disc galaxies. We discuss the properties of each sample galaxy distinguishing between those characterized by regular or peculiar kinematics. In early-type disc galaxies ionized gas tends to rotate faster than stars and to have a lower velocity dispersion (Vg > V⋆ and σg < σ⋆), whereas in late-type spirals gas and stars show almost the same rotation velocities and velocity dispersions (Vg ≃ V⋆ and σg ≃ σ⋆). Incorporating the early-type disc galaxies studied by Bertola et al. (1995), Fisher (1997) and Corsini et al. (1999), we have compiled a sample of some 40 galaxies for which the major-axis radial profiles of both the stellar and gaseous components have been measured. The value of σ⋆ measured at Re/4 turns out to be strongly correlated with the galaxy morphological type, while σg is not and sometimes takes values above the range expected from thermal motions or small-scale turbulence.

The influence of gas on the structure of disk merger remnants
We present a large set of merger simulations of early-type disc galaxies with mass ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 and 10% of the total disc mass in gas. The internal orbital structure and the kinematic and photometric properties of the remnants are analysed in detail and compared to pure stellar mergers. In contrast to the collisionless case equal-mass mergers with gas do not result in very boxy remnant...

متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Central Kiloparsec of Seyfert and Inactive Host Galaxies: a Comparison of Two-Dimensional Stellar and Gaseous Kinematics
We investigate the properties of the two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of ionised gas and stars in the central kiloparsecs of a matched sample of nearby active (Seyfert) and inactive galaxies, using the SAURON Integral Field Unit on the William Herschel Telescope. The ionised gas distributions show a range of low excitation regions such as star formation rings in Seyferts and inactive...
متن کاملTwo Disk Components from a Gas Rich Disk-Disk Merger
We employ N-body, smoothed particle hydrodynamical simulations, including detailed treatment of chemical enrichment, to follow a gas-rich merger which results in a galaxy with disk morphology. We trace the kinematic, structural, and chemical properties of stars formed before, during, and after the merger. We show that such a merger produces two exponential disk components, with the older, hotte...
